Justin Karp is a multimedia journalist and desert dweller-turned-National Capital neophyte. After spending the six best years of his life in Tempe, Ariz., graduating from THE Arizona State University and working in sports talk radio, he now lives in the Washington Metro area and is earning his Master’s in online journalism at the University of Maryland.
Before falling in love with 120-degree July days, Justin was born and raised in Santa Clara, Calif., only a stone’s throw away from where your precious iPod was invented. His childhood was filled with 90-minute round-trip drives to see the San Jose Sharks play at the Cow Palace and the San Francisco 49ers play at Candlestick Park. Thanks to his family’s Brooklyn heritage, though, he bleeds Yankee blue.
Because of this, Rich Gray constantly feels the need to remind him that he was at Game 7 of the 2001 World Series and that he hugged a guy with purple hair when Luiz Gonzalez walked it off.
He was in the building when Jerry Rice broke the all-time touchdown record, reveres Jamie Baker and Ray Whitney for their late-game heroics and worships at the altar of Sparky (and Herb Sendek).
Beyond that, Justin reads a lot, has a surprising amount of interests outside of sports, is proud of being a beer snob and is training to run this ridiculous route through Washington, D.C. in March 2011:
